The Law of Marketing
Broadly the Law of Marketing defines a MARKET as a place where buyers and sellers come together, connect, interact and exchange goods or services for money.
MARKETING is defined this way:
“It is the process of teaching consumers why they should choose your product or service over your competitors. The key is finding the right marketing method and defining the right marketing message to use to educate and influence your consumers.
Companies make the mistake of thinking that marketing is just one thing, but marketing is everything that the consumer encounters when it comes to your business – from advertising, to what they hear, to the customer service they receive, to the follow-up care that you provide.
“Marketing as all the processes involved in getting a product or service from the manufacturer or seller to the ultimate consumer. It includes creating the product or service concept, identifying who is likely to purchase it, promoting it and moving it through the proper selling channels” – from www.thebalance.com
Sales guru, Jay Conrad Levinson, defines MARKETING as:
“EVERY bit of contact your business has with anyone in the outside world”
That’s fine to a point.
But I see these, except maybe Jay’s, as representing the LETTER of the LAW of MARKETING rather than the SPIRIT.
They refer to processes, outcomes, business models, buyers, sellers, consumers and, of course, sales & money. But where are the people? Where is the true serving?
Some of the examples I will share in future will shock you…but also open your eyes to what’s going on in the marketplace; and what you can do to thrive and prosper.
The SPIRIT of [the LAW of] MARKETING goes deeper:
…It is about people because people matter far more than things
…It’s about serving, giving and caring for others
…It [i.e. serving others] is a lifestyle, not an event
…It represents WHO we are, much more that what we do
…It is heart-based
…It’s not about making money because money is just the way we keep score
…When it’s all said and done, marketing is about COMMUNICATING LOVE.
GOOD NEWS:
First, the Marketing Spirit is easy to learn, understand and implement, if you want to.
Second, even if no more dollars are added to your sales, you still ‘win’ by experiencing the joy of giving & serving others; after all, that’s what we humans are wired for. So there is NO downside.
