The definition of MARKETING is wrong

Here is the definition of MARKETING from 4 dictionaries…

Webster’s Dictionary 1913 Edition:

“The act of selling or of purchasing in a market; activities required by a producer to sell products, including advertising, storing, taking orders and distribution to vendors or individuals; the entire process of storing, shipping and selling which promotes and actualizes a sales transaction”

Word Net Dictionary:

“The exchange of goods for an agreed sum of money; merchandising; the commercial processes involved in promoting, selling and distributing a product or service”

Dictionary.com:

“The act of buying or selling in a market; the total of activities involved in the transfer of goods from the producer or seller to the consumer or buyer, including advertising, shipping, storing and selling”

Macquarie Dictionary

“The total process whereby goods are put on to the market; the act of buying or selling in a market”

It seems that ‘the system’ treats selling and marketing as basically the same:

I disagree; they are very different…

…Old [1913] or new, the definition of MARKETING seems to ignore CUSTOMERS

…There is no mention of PEOPLE, just buyers, sellers, producers and consumers

…Marketing it seems is about process, outcomes, activities, products & services

…If I were a cynic, I would say it’s ALL about money, not people!

That leads to MY definition of MARKETING:

It can be summed up in two words – COMMUNICATING LOVE.

Clearly THAT will require further explanation; stay tuned.
